Swiss Surfing announce team for the 2021 ISA World Games

Six athletes will travel to El Salvador as part of the Swiss Surfing Team to compete in the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games at the end of May, which is a qualification event for the Olympic Games.  

Originally scheduled to be held in May 2020, the World Surfing Games, have now been rescheduled for 29 May – 6  June 2021 at two world-class locations in El Salvador: La Bocana and El Sunzal attracting the world’s best surfing athletes also from the World Surf League (WSL).

The team was announced by the Swiss Surfing Association following an overall consideration of the following non-hierarchical features: individual performance in international competitions, results at the Swiss Surfing Championship and an individual assessment from the sports committee and the trainers from Swiss Surfing.  

The Swiss Surfing National team is made up of three men and three women:

Women:

  • Fanny Bühlmann
  • Alicia Martinet
  • Fabienne Sutter

Men:

  • Fantin Habashi
  • Michael Zaugg
  • Swen Zaugg

The team will be supported by:

  • Benedek Sarkany (Team Coach)
  • Thibault Guergam (Assistant Team Coach)
  • Philipp Mappes (Physio & Rehabilitation coach)

Swiss Surfing said: “We are delighted to announce the Swiss Surfing Team for this momentous Olympic qualifier.

It’s been a challenging time for athletes to train and compete due to the global pandemic situation. We wish the team all the best at the World Surfing Games and hope they will enjoy being part of this unique occasion in surfing history.

The 2021 edition of the World Surfing Games is the last remaining piece of the Tokyo 2020 qualification process. There are five remaining slots for men to be earned and seven for women, which will go to the highest ranking eligible athletes in the event. Surfing will make its Olympic debut in July 2021 at Tsurigasaki Beach, in Japan.
